Alex Ovechkin fought Hurricanes forward Andrei Svechnikov in the first period of Game Three. Ovechkin knocked Svechnikov out with three straight rights and the rookie forward did not return to the game. The Hurricanes rode the momentum to a dominant, physical 5-0 victory.
The tensions did not end after the buzzer sounded. Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour said the fight “made me sick”. Svechnikov’s older brother Evgeny, who plays in the Detroit Red Wings organization, went a more cryptic route.
The 22-year-old forward sent a threat to Ovechkin through his Instagram story. Using a line from the film A Nightmare on Elm Street, Evgeny posted the words “One, Two, Freddy’s coming for you” and tagged Ovechkin’s account.

One, Two, Freddy’s Coming For You is an adaptation of the nursery song, “One, Two, Buckle My Shoe,” but revamped to become Freddy Krueger’s theme song. The line is sung by a chorus of children jump roping in the film.
Evgeny Svechnikov was the Red Wings’ first-round pick in 2015. He’s played 16 NHL games during his three professional seasons in North America. The forward missed the entire 2018-19 season due to knee surgery.
After Monday’s game, Ovechkin made sure to extend his well wishes to Andrei Svechnikov after the fight.
“I hope he’s okay,” Ovechkin said. “You don’t want to see a guy get hurt.”
Brind’Amour was less forgiving.
“I don’t know if there’s words exchanged,” he admitted, “but one guy’s gloves come off way first, and that’s Ovi, that’s not our guy.”
