Why Yankees' DJ LeMahieu doesn't want to hear your 'MVP!' chants - NJ.com

NEW YORK — Several times in the Yankees’ Saturday afternoon win over the Red Sox in the first game of a day-night doubleheader, DJ LeMahieu had to block out the crowd.

He heard the fans chanting, “MVP! MVP! MVP!”

He likes it, he said, but it can get a bit distracting.

“I try to block it out and focus and just try to put together a good at-bat,” he told reporters in the clubhouse after the 9-2 victory in Game 1.

“Obviously, it’s cool and it’s a good feeling that the fans appreciate you. But for me, it’s just going up there, not changing anything and having competitive at-bats.”

LeMahieu was asked about his 17 home runs — two more than his career high in just 96 games.

“I like hitting homers,” LeMahieu said. “It’s fun. And that right field — I think I like that right-field wall, for sure.”

After the doubleheader sweep, LeMahieu was hitting .336 with 75 RBI in 98 games. He’ll likely see most of his time at first base for a while with Edwin Encarnacion and Luke Voit on the injured list. But with Mike Trout of the Angels have another monstrous season (36-87-.296), an MVP award for LeMahieu is unlikely.
