Aldrick Rosas has gone from the Pro Bowl to putting the Giants in a hole.
Rosas missed a PAT for the third straight game, and a botched snapper-holder exchange prevented the kicker from even attempting another as the Giants wound up point-chasing in a 34-27 loss Sunday to the Jets at MetLife Stadium.
Pat Shurmur often says kickers get “to miss one [PAT] in a lifetime,” so the special teams trio of long snapper Zak DeOssie, holder Riley Dixon and Rosas might be on borrowed time in the coach’s eyes.
“I don’t think our confidence is down in any way or anybody is shaky, but when we step on the field we have to put up points and help this team win,” Rosas said. “It’s just plain and simple: Kick the ball through through the goalposts.”
With all the other shortcomings the Giants have on both sides of the ball, there is little room for an error like giving away points. The Giants squandered a chance to tie the score at 14-14 when a mishandled snap forced Dixon to roll out and throw an incomplete pass.
“We’re a unit,” Rosas said. “All 11 of us have to work together to put points on the board.”
Trailing 21-19, the Giants scored on a two-point conversion, but Golden Tate was called for offensive pass interference. The penalty took the points off the board and turned it into a 43-yard PAT attempt for Rosas, who missed wide right.
Rosas is 8-for-10 on field goals — he attempted only six in the first eight games of the season — and 19-for-22 on PATs. He also missed three PATs during his first season in 2017 before he blossomed into an unexpected Pro Bowler when he missed just one field goal and one PAT on 65 total kicks in 2018.
“I don’t know,” Rosas said when asked the reason for his returning inconsistency. “We have to trust each other and trust the operation.”
Special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey offered an explanation earlier in the week: Rosas has lost his rhythm.
“Sometimes he has a tendency to get a little fast, he gets a little anxious,” McGaughey said. “He has to calm himself down, slow down and go through his mechanics, go through his progressions and not rush through anything. That has been his issue right now.”
