Saquon Barkley-Landon Collins blowup ends with postgame gesture - New York Post

LANDOVER, Md. — There was a moment in Sunday’s 41-35 overtime victory over the Redskins when Saquon Barkley and Landon Collins went face-to-face and were not exchanging pleasantries.

“I don’t think I can say,’’ Barkley told The Post, not wanting to reveal what he said to Collins because he did not want to use profanity.

It was late in the second quarter and Daniel Jones got hit, and then hit again by linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton, who was flagged for unnecessary roughness. Barkley, Sterling Shepard and several offensive linemen came to Jones’ defense. When Collins, the former Giants safety, yanked tight end Kaden Smith down from behind, Barkley confronted Collins.

“It was a little chippie,’’ Barkley said. “Or like, ‘Chill out … just chill out.’ We had a couple of words for each other but it was all love after the game.’’

Indeed, Barkley and Collins exchanged jerseys after the game.

“I respect him, he was a big brother to me last year and he’s still a big brother,’’ Barkley said. “I love his game and respect his game.’’

Collins forced a Jones fumble but guard Kevin Zeitler recovered the loose ball. It looked as if the Giants bamboozled Collins, in the second quarter. From the Washington 33-yard line, Barkley came out of the backfield and ran straight up the gut of the Redskins defense. Collins, playing deep, took several steps inside to Shepard, leaving the middle of the field wide open for Barkley, who with no one around him easily hauled in Jones’ pass and strolled the last few yards into the end zone to make it 21-14.

Rookie WR Darius Slayton did not have a catch. He hurt his knee early in the game, came off the field for a while but was able to return.

Pat Shurmur lost a replay challenge early in the second quarter contesting a dropped pass by Golden Tate, who got both hands on the ball before CB Danny Johnson hit Tate from behind and knocked the ball loose. Smith recovered the ball but the pass was ruled incomplete. The play happened right in front of the Giants’ bench but Shurmur must have seen something no one else did, as he threw the red challenge flag.

Markus Golden’s sack early in the third quarter gave him 10 in his first season with the Giants. Golden is the first Giants linebacker with double-digit sacks since Lawrence Taylor in 1990. Golden is the first Giants defensive player to reach double figures in sacks since Jason Pierre-Paul in 2014.

DT B.J. Hill dropped Case Keenum late in the third quarter, Hill’s first sack of the season.

Mike Remmers was evaluated for a concussion in the second quarter and was replaced at right tackle by Nick Gates, who started last week at right guard for Zeitler.

CB Sam Beal was forced out in the third quarter with a neck injury.

Alec Ogletree did not appear on the injury report all week and yet he did not take the field with the starters on defense, as Deone Bucannon lined up alongside David Mayo as the first-team inside linebackers. It looked as if Ogletree might have been benched but he was not. Ogletree experienced back spasms in warm-ups and was kept out of the game.
