Eric Dungey’s XFL debut: Syracuse fans flood Twitter clamoring for quarterback - syracuse.com

Syracuse, N.Y. — The relaunch of the XFL debuted this past weekend, and the biggest draw for Central New Yorkers was former Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey returning to the field.

Dungey still is perhaps the most popular football player in CNY, but those who tuned in for the Dallas Renegades’ 15-9 loss to St. Louis on Sunday hoping to catch Dungey in action were left flooding Twitter, clamoring for the Renegades to bench starting quarterback Philip Nelson in favor of their guy.

Syracuse’s all-time passing leader got on the field during one series, but did not record any statistics.

Dungey was slowed by a minor leg issue throughout training camp, putting Nelson in position to earn the start in Sunday’s opener while presumed starter Landry Jones heals up.

Jones was active Sunday but did not play. It’s possible he returns next week at Los Angeles. Regardless, he is one of the primary faces of the new league and his coach in Dallas, Bob Stoops, coached and recruited Jones to Oklahoma.

Here is a quick spin around the XFL, checking in on the other four former Syracuse players who are part of the league:

Jay Bromley - DC Defenders

Bromley recorded three tackles in the Defenders’ 31-19 victory against Seattle.

Jordan Martin - Seattle Dragons

Martin recorded a pair of tackles in the loss to the Defenders.

Shamarko Thomas - DC Defenders

Thomas did not record any stats in Week 1.

Andrew Tiller - Tampa Bay Vipers

Tiller was placed on the Vipers’ injured reserve list Feb. 1.
