Thursday brings a new twist in the free agency saga of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.
Why should we take this rumor seriously?
ESPN’s Adam Schefter appeared last week on the Rich Eisen podcast, and recounted a conversation he had with ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington. Schefter said Darlington is plugged in on the Brady situation, and lists the Tennessee Titans as the favorites to sign Brady. After that came the Las Vegas Raiders and then finally the Patriots. Schefter also said the Los Angeles Chargers are a long shot to sign Brady.
Making matters worse, the Boston Herald reports the Patriots have not yet reached out to Brady or his agent. They were expected to do so this week at the NFL Combine.
If the Titans are the leading contender to sign Brady, Tennessee’s management isn’t tipping its hand. Head coach Mike Vrabel and general manager Jon Robinson were asked about their interest in Brady on Tuesday at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. Both ducked the question, according to USA Today.
Also in Tuesday, The Boston Globe reported the Buccaneers are a “serious threat to steal Brady away from the Patriots” and Tampa Bay has been quietly “lurking as a major player in the Brady sweepstakes.”

On Wednesday, NFL Network’s Michael Giardi reported he “spoke with a number of NFL people over the last 36 hours or so here in Indy. The initial reaction has been ‘there’s no way Tom Brady is leaving New England,’ but as you dig deeper, execs/coaches/scouts see the Titans, Raiders and Giants as possible suitors. One exec said to me, ‘Is Tom Brady, better than Derek Carr? Is he better than Tannehill? If I was those organizations, I’d be thinking real hard about it.' Another noted that it’s also not just a QB you’e getting, it’s the brand. ‘There are games to be won and money to be made.' Don’t discount the bottom line in this league. Ever.”
Brady is a six-time Super Bowl champion, four-time Super Bowl MVP and three-time NFL MVP. He’s appeared in nine Super Bowls during his 20 years in New England.
Brady will be a free agent for the first time in his career and insists he wants to test the open market. Because of language in his most recent contract, the Patriots cannot use the franchise tag on their franchise player.
