James Paxton and J.A. Happ were supposed to stabilize the Yankees’ rotation when they were acquired last offseason.
Instead, the veteran left-handers have mostly disappointed this year — a trend that continued during the otherwise wildly successful Yankees homestand that ended with Wednesday’s 8-7 win over the Blue Jays.
Paxton was knocked out after just 4¹/₃ innings against Toronto, but not before he allowed a career-high three homers and matched a season-worst six earned runs allowed.
And Wednesday manager Aaron Boone also said the team would use an opener — likely Chad Green — on Sunday in London against the Red Sox instead of Happ.
“With these [additional] off days, it’s a good time to get all the guys extra time,’’ Boone said.
Boone anticipates bringing Happ back either at Citi Field against the Mets or at Tropicana Field versus the Rays when the Yankees return from London.
Happ has given up 20 homers, and the small dimensions of London Stadium certainly wouldn’t have helped.
The 36-year-old Happ said he was fine with the decision, but it wasn’t his idea.
“I think we look at this as potentially beneficial,’’ Happ said of the additional rest. “I wasn’t looking for extra rest, but I’ll try to make the most of it.”
Paxton, coming off two solid outings, was roughed up on Wednesday, giving up a three-run homer to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. before he retired a batter, and a two-run shot to Danny Jansen in the second. Gurriel also took him deep in the fifth.
Paxton said he couldn’t get any rhythm on the mound.
“I haven’t done a very good job of that,’’ Paxton said. “I’m not finding it out there consistently. I’m definitely struggling right now. I’m gonna work to figure it out, and I’m gonna figure it out at some point.”
“I don’t think he had the power of his fastball or the bite on his breaking ball,’’ Boone said. “He wasn’t dictating counts. … He was a little off with everything.”
But Boone said he remains confident that Paxton’s left knee, which sent him to the injured list earlier in the season, is not the problem.
“I feel good where he’s at from a health standpoint,’’ Boone said.
