49ers awards: Nick Bosa Named NFC Defensive Player of the Week - Niners Nation

On Wednesday morning, the NFL announced that San Francisco 49ers rookie Nick Bosa was named the defensive player of the week after a dominant performance against the Cleveland Browns. Bosa had two sacks, though he probably should have had three, he also had four hurries, three quarterback hits, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble as well. ESPN’s Nick Wagoner tweeted that Bosa was the only 49ers player to register two sacks and force and recover a fumble in a single game in the last 25 years.

Pressures can be deceiving, but win-rate isn’t. PFF had Bosa with a 45% win-rate on Monday. League average is around 17-20%. I charted the first half, and Bosa already is at seven wins. His career high is nine, which nobody else on the roster has came close to. Here is part of their blurb on Bosa:

Not only was this the best game we have seen by a rookie from the 2019 class through Week 5, it was among the five highest-graded games we have ever seen from a rookie edge defender AND was also the highest pass-rush win rate recorded by a rookie edge in a single game in the PFF era (since 2006). The Bosa family may own two of the top five edge rushers in the NFL at the moment in Joey and Nick.

To think this was the second game where he played “starter snaps” and is already the conference’s defensive player of the week is scary. What a game for the rookie.
