Mets' Carlos Beltran mentioned in same sentence as this top manager - New York Post

It’s hard enough to predict how a manager with big league experience will do in New York leading the Mets. And impossible to know how it will turn out with a man who has never managed a game at any professional level.

Nevertheless, that’s the route the Yankees took after the 2017 season when they hired Aaron Boone, and the Mets are on the same path with Carlos Beltran.

In today’s world the front office is high on the manager communicating with the players and, according to one of Beltran’s former hitting coaches, that is an area he excels in.

“In New York nobody worked harder talking to the young guys and the veterans to help them through any problems they were having. I think he will communicate fine,’’ said Jeff Pentland, who was the Yankees’ hitting coach in 2015 and was with Beltran in Kansas City in 2003 and 2004. “He reminds me of Dave Martinez with the Nationals. He is smart and has the ability to communicate with young people.’’

According to Pentland, Beltran had a positive effect on Brett Gardner and Greg Bird and has a knack at looking at film to find out hints that help hitters.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora credited Beltran’s advice for the Yankees scoring 29 runs in a two-game series against his club in London. Beltran, who interviewed for the job Boone got, was a special adviser to general manager Brian Cashman this past season.

“He is incredibly gifted with screens and videos,’’ Pentland said. “He sees things nobody else sees. He has a great eye. He was around players and expressed his opinions and helped them.’’
