Leon Rose hasn’t even officially become the Knicks president yet, and already the CAA super-agent’s job just became a little harder.
One of the stars some speculated he could land, client Karl-Anthony Towns of the Timberwolves, seems to be more optimistic about his future in Minnesota.
The New Jersey native, who the Knicks were hoping to trade for this offseason, was reunited Thursday night with close friend and former Net D’Angelo Russell. The Post’s Marc Berman previously reported the Knicks were hoping to be in good position to trade for a “disgruntled” superstar this offseason, with Towns being the dream scenario, but that could be a harder sell now that he is reunited with Russell.
“I think with D-Lo here, it’s always going to be a big incentive for me to want to stay,” Towns told The Athletic. “D-Lo is a big part of everything the vision is. D-Lo always knows he’s going to be wanted because his brother is here with him and he always knows he’s going to have his back covered because I’m always going to be there for him.”
The Timberwolves had tried to land Russell in free agency, before acquiring him from the Warriors on Thursday. In October, Towns, Russell and Suns star Devin Booker were on the cover of SLAM magazine. Russell said then they would do it again, “when we’re all on the same team.” Towns, a 24-year-old two-time All-Star under contract through 2024 with four years and $131 million left on his deal after this season, was so excited he met Russell at the airport, bringing the new Timberwolves jersey with him.
“I’d be lying if I told you I thought it was possible,” Towns said. “I’m shocked like everybody else. We’ve been putting it into the universe since Day 1. We’ve never been shy about saying it in the media or interviews or wherever it may be. If you want something to happen, you have to keep believing and keep saying it to the universe and repeating it and one day the universe will hear it and give you your wish.”
It’s a big change from Towns’ reaction to the Timberwolves trading Robert Covington to the Rockets on Tuesday. He seemed despondent, with Minnesota losing 13 straight games. But adding Russell has altered his feelings it seems.
“First off we’re not friends, we’re brothers. That’s like blood to me,” Towns said. “Why I think we’re going to be great, when you see the great teams in history, they always had a great big man and a great guard. I think we now have those two things set up for success.”
The Knicks, meanwhile, are still searching for them.
