Yankees' DJ LeMahieu is answering key question in loud way - NJ.com

NEW YORK — Before signing with the Yankees, DJ LeMahieu won three Gold Golves in Colorado — as a second baseman.

When the Yankees lured him away from the Rockies with a two-year, $24-million deal in the offseason, it was with the idea that he’d be used all around the infield in a way he’d never been before.

So far, he’s acing that test.

LeMahieu started Saturday’s 11-5 win over the his former club at Yankee Stadium at third base. He shifted to first base in the fifth inning after Luke Voit left following getting hit in the face with a fastball.

At both positions, LeMahieu made excellent plays. At third base, he made a nifty backhand stop before throwing across the diamond. He made a few good grabs at first base, as well.

“The versatility,” manager Aaron Boone said. “You saw some special plays at first today. A really good play to start things off down at third ... Wherever he goes he plays it like a Gold Glover."

LeMahieu has primarily played second base, appearing there 57 times this season. But he's also seen action in 29 games at third base and in 16 games at first base.

All the while, he’s been one of the best hitters in the game. He'll wake up Sunday with a .334 batting average, 13 homers and 67 RBI in 371 at-bats after collecting three more hits Saturday. He was an All-Star earlier in the month.

LeMahieu said he’s feeling better about playing in new spots.

“Yeah, more and more,” he said. “I think the more I play over there, there’s a level of comfort.”
